Technology and agriculture inspire girls and young women on International Women's Day

Students from rural and urban schools visited IICA Headquarters, in San José, to participate in group dynamics and talks on how science and technological innovation can provide real solutions to the problems of their communities

San José, March 8, 2022 (IICA) – Immersed in a new world of innovation, girls and young women developed skills in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) in a workshop organized by the leading company in technological innovation NI and the Inter-American Institute of Cooperation for Agriculture (IICA), within the framework of the commemorations of International Women's Day.
Students from rural and urban schools visited IICA Headquarters, in San José, to participate in group dynamics and talks on how science and technological innovation can provide real solutions to the problems of their communities, in addition to making visible the valuable contribution of women in agricultural and scientific activities.

“We commemorate International Women's Day together with 20 girls and young people learning about digital skills. What we wanted was for them to come to the Agriculture Tomorrow Interpretation Center (CIMAG) to experiment with tools such as Lego Robotics and Arduino, an open source programming system; to later contribute to the development of solutions for their communities,” said Emmanuel Picado, Manager of Information Technology, Communication and Digital Agriculture at IICA.

“We know that there is a huge technological gap and we want to reduce it through training so that they take ownership of the tools and can innovate. We believe that these types of activities will inspire and empower young people from rural areas to develop in the areas of engineering, science and digital agriculture”, added Picado.

“The skills that we want to develop in National Instruments (NI) in the young participants are independence, love for science, that they develop in an activity that they are passionate about and that they know the importance of the role of women in the STEM area. ”, commented Jessica Díaz, a professional in the Engineering Education area at said company.
